Dublin to Cliffs of Moher: Day Trips, Train, Bus and Car

The Four Ways Compared

The table sets the two guided options against the two you plan yourself. Fares come from the official Irish Rail, Bus Eireann, TII and visitor centre pages, the coach figures from the tour listings. The train fare is the Heuston to Galway day return, the bus fare the Galway to cliffs day return on route 350, and the toll the one barrier on the M7.

Which One Fits

Drive if you want Doolin, Lahinch or a night on the coast. The M7 toll is EUR 2.30 for a car and parking at the cliffs is included in admission, so the car pays off when you stay over on the coast. Take the train only with a night away: Heuston to Galway is EUR 33.30 ($37.97) day return, route 350 adds EUR 24 day return from Galway, and the connections do not allow a same-day round trip to the cliffs.

Book a day trip if you have one day and no car, because the coach covers the 261.5 km each way while you doze. For a group, the private chauffeur is priced per vehicle for up to 3, 6 or 15 passengers, picks up anywhere in Dublin and excludes cliff entry.

The Route and the Numbers

Take the M7 towards Limerick, then the M18 to Ennis, the N85 to Ennistymon, the N67 to Lahinch and the R478 through Liscannor to the cliffs. A routing engine with no traffic gives 261.5 km and 3 h 21 min. The official visitor site says about 4 hours via Limerick.

The gap is the two-lane N85, N67 and R478 after Ennis, plus real traffic and stops, so plan on the longer figure. The alternative through Galway on the M6 is 286.2 km and 3 h 50 min. There is one barrier toll on the M7 at the Portlaoise plaza, EUR 2.30 for a car, payable in cash or by card.

Parking and the Last Few Kilometres

Parking at the cliffs is included in the admission ticket, so there is no separate car park charge. Set your GPS to 52.97201, -9.42592 for the visitor centre. Liscannor sits 6 km south and Doolin 7 km north, both handy for a stop before or after.

Note that the clifftop walk from Liscannor to the visitor centre is closed for safety, so you cannot arrive on foot that way. Admission is EUR 15 ($17.10) at the gate or from EUR 8 ($9.12) online. Train to Galway, Then Route 350

Irish Rail runs from Dublin Heuston to Galway: an adult single costs EUR 30.45 ($34.72) and a day return EUR 33.30 ($37.97). At Galway Bus Station you pick up Bus Eireann route 350, which takes 1 h 50 min to the Cliffs of Moher coach park and costs EUR 13.50 single or EUR 24 day return for an adult. Trains also run to Ennis, and route 350 serves Ennis too, at 58 minutes and EUR 10.50 single or EUR 16 day return.

Weekday Route 350 from Galway

The official Bus Eireann weekday timetable for route 350. The first four morning buses from Galway are set beside four of the afternoon and evening buses that pass the cliffs on the way back, so the table reads as the outer limits of a day by bus.

One Day or Two

The first bus from Galway leaves at 06:00, so catching it from Dublin means sleeping in Galway the night before. The evening buses back reach Galway at 20:34, 21:44 and 23:49, too late to count on a train to Dublin. Treat the trip as two days, with a night in Galway, Ennis or Doolin.

Meeting Points and Start Times

The table gives every meeting point and departure time exactly as each operator lists it. All of them sit within a short walk of the Liffey except Heuston station.

Getting There Before Dawn

These are dawn starts, so plan the walk to your stop the night before. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, which is what most listings ask for. Two operators are strict about lateness: the Finn McCools coach leaves at 6:45 AM sharp and does not wait, even if you phone ahead, and the same applies to the Paddywagon coach on Gardiner Street.

The rail tour is harder still, because the 7:00 AM train from Heuston does not wait for anyone. If you have booked the small-group van, reconfirm your hotel pickup with the operator 48 hours ahead, since it serves ten listed hotels and the exact time varies by address.

What the Ticket Costs on Your Own

These are the official rates from cliffsofmoher.ie. The gate price is the walk-up adult rate of €15.00 ($17.10), while booking online starts from €8.00 ($9.12). Children aged 12 and under enter free.

What Admission Covers

One ticket covers the visitor centre and its exhibition, the paved paths and viewing areas, O'Brien's Tower and unlimited parking. The paths at the site run 3.5 km, including an 800 m resurfaced stretch north of O'Brien's Tower and a route to the Southern Viewing Platform. The cliffs reach 214 m just north of the tower.

The longer coastal walk is another matter. The 6 km clifftop path from Liscannor to the visitor centre is closed for safety, and walkers from Doolin must turn back at Surfers Path, so there is no way onto the site on foot from either village.

Opening Hours by Month

The visitor centre changes its hours with the season. These are the official opening times, which matter only if you go on your own: every day trip here arrives well inside them.

The Afternoon, Trip by Trip

The table shows where each day trip goes once the clifftop visit ends, and where lunch happens. No day trip here includes lunch. The Finn McCools coach has no lunch stop at all, so its listing suggests a packed lunch.

The Stops Along the Way

The Burren covers around 530 square kilometres, with about 250 of them exposed limestone up to 800 m thick and roughly 325 million years old. Most Galway-bound coaches cross it on the coast road.

Dunguaire Castle at Kinvara dates from 1520 and has been closed to visitors since 2023, so the tours that pass it show it from the road or a photo stop. Bunratty Castle was begun around 1450 and restored in 1956. The small group and the rail tour include its entry and the Folk Park, while the Paddywagon loop stops for a photo only. Averages and Daylight

February to November covers the main touring season. Daylight shapes the day as much as rain does: a November sunset at 4:33 PM leaves little light after the cliffs, and the boat and cave day runs only April to October.

The Status Warnings

The Cliffs of Moher Experience posts a three-level status. Yellow means conditions are hazardous, so take care on the paths. Orange means it is too hazardous to visit.

Red means the centre closes. Fog is the other big factor, with about 28 days of fog a year at Shannon, and fog can hide the cliffs completely. The official site recommends checking met.ie before you set out from Dublin.

On a yellow day the coaches still run and the paths stay open, so the practical difference is a stronger wind at the wall and a shorter walk.

What the Day Trips Do in Bad Weather

The coach and rail day trips run in all weather, and the operators may swap the order of stops for traffic or wind. On the boat and cave day a cancelled sailing is replaced with a bird of prey display. Your own lever is the free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure: check the forecast the evening before and cancel then if an orange status looks likely.

The coach and rail day trips give no weather refund beyond that window, so the evening check is the one that counts.
