The Two Numbers to Trust
A routing engine puts the Dublin to Cliffs of Moher drive at 261.5 km and 3 h 21 min via the M7 and M18, with no traffic and no stops. The official visitor site says the trip from Dublin is approximately 4 hours via Limerick. The gap between the two is real. The routing figure is a floor estimate from a public router and it ignores the final 40 minutes or so of two-lane N85, N67 and R478 road between Ennis and the cliffs. It also ignores traffic, roadworks and any stop. Plan around 4 hours each way and you will never feel late.
Third-party sources sometimes quote 2 h 45 min and about 280 km for the trip. That figure is a pure motorway-driving estimate that leaves out the country roads after Ennis, so treat it with caution.

Dublin to Limerick on the M7
You leave Dublin on the M7 and stay on it through the midlands past Portlaoise. This is the longest single stretch of the journey and the easiest driving, dual carriageway most of the way toward Limerick. The one toll plaza on the route sits on this road at the M7-M8 junction near Portlaoise.
Fuel and toilet stops are plentiful along this corridor.
M18 to Ennis
Past Limerick you pick up the M18 north toward Ennis in County Clare. This stretch is untolled. It is short, modern and fast, and it delivers you to the edge of Ennis, the last real town before the coast roads begin.
Ennis is a sensible last stop for fuel, cash or food if you plan to push on to the cliffs.
Ennis to the Cliffs on the N85, N67 and R478
After Ennis the motorway ends. You take the N85 out of town, then the N67 toward the coast, and finally the R478 through Ennistymon and Lahinch before climbing up to Liscannor and the cliffs. These are two-lane rural roads with villages, bends, stone walls and often tour buses and coaches in summer.
This is the stretch that eats the difference between 3 h 21 min and 4 hours. Ennistymon and Lahinch both make good slower-pace stops, and Lahinch sits right on the coast road before the final few kilometres to the visitor centre.
The Villages at Either End of the Cliffs
Liscannor lies 6 km south of the visitor centre and Doolin lies 7 km north. Both are working villages with pubs and parking, and both are close enough that some drivers base themselves there instead of making the Dublin run in one day. Finding the Visitor Centre
Set your GPS to 52.97201, -9.42592. That puts you at the visitor centre car park rather than a rural boreen near it. The centre's opening hours vary seasonally and are not stated here, so check the official visitor site before you set off.
O'Brien's Tower closes with the site and can shut early for weather, and the official advice is to allow at least 20 minutes before closing if you want to visit the tower or the exhibition.
How Much Time You Need at the Cliffs
The safe designated paths at the Experience run 3.5 km, including an 800 m resurfaced stretch north of O'Brien's Tower plus the route to the Southern Viewing Platform. The clifftop walk from Liscannor to the visitor centre is closed for safety, so you cannot arrive on foot that way.

The official weather status system has three levels. Yellow means conditions are hazardous, take care. Orange means conditions are too hazardous to visit.
